Touch Up Scratches on Furniture

Wood furniture scratches range from light surface marks to deep gouges. Matching the right product to the depth of the damage is the difference between a visible patch and an invisible repair.

1. Assess the scratch depth — surface level versus deep gouge.
2. Clean the area to remove dust, polish, and oils.
3. For surface scratches, apply a color-matched marker.
4. For deep scratches, press a fill stick into the void.
5. Work in thin layers, letting each set before the next.
6. Blend and level the repair flush with the surrounding surface.
7. Finish with a topcoat to lock in the color and sheen.

• Match to the lightest tone in the grain, then deepen — it is easier to darken than lighten.
• Use a putty for chips and dents, a marker for hairline scratches.
